President Trump nominates David Zatezalo for MSHA Assistant Secretary of Labor

Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, President Trump announced his nomination of David G. Zatezalo, 62, for the position of assistant secretary of labor for the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), The Intelligencer. Wheeling News-Register reports. Before retiring in 2014, Zatezalo served in several top positions at Rhino Resources, a coal company that clashed with federal regulators when the Obama administration tried to increase enforcement following the 2010 Upper Big Branch mine explosion.

Prior to joining Rhino Resources, Zatezalo served as president of Hopedale Mining, near Cadiz, Ohio. He started his mining career in 1974 with Consolidation Coal Co. as a union laborer, became a foreman, and eventually became general superintendent for Southern Ohio Coal Co. and general manager of AEP’s Windsor Coal Co. He later served as vice president of operations of AEP’s Appalachian mining operations, and as a general mine manager for Broken Hill Proprietary in Australia.

Zatezalo received his mining engineering degree from West Virginia University and his MBA from Ohio University. Senate confirmation hearings are expected to take place within the next couple of weeks.
