2017 KCSA Good Neighbor Award Winner - Mountain Companies
2017 Good Neighbor Award Winner
In the Spring of 2017, Carter Caves State Park in Olive Hill, KY, reached out to a Mountain Companies to help them find a safe Canoe/Kayak access site for visitors to participate in organized tours on Tygart’s Creek. The original access site used by the State Park was located directly off of Interstate 64 and posed significant safety issues for all involved. Mountain Companies worked with State Park officials and came up with a plan to allow access to Tygarts Creek vis property at the Valley Stone Quarry location in Olive Hill, a safe and satisfactory solution to the State Parks’ access issues.
The scope of the project included site prep work, drawing and the placement of over 150 tons of stone to make the creek entry point easier to reach by the State Park busses that would be dropping off kayakers and cancers when Tygarts Creek water levels are high enough. Prior to Mountain’s help with the new access point, we were limited on the amount of trips we could host on the creek. The project resulted in greater accessibility by lowering the creek entrance grade to accommodate more guests. Mountain employees Dempsey Barker and Tony Wolfe from Valley Stone Quarry spearheaded the project on the Mountain Companies side. They spent countless hours operating a dozer to complete the finish grade and placing stone on the entrance driveway.
Mountain Companies was proud to donate employee volunteer time and talent, as well as resources to support Carter Caves State Park, a community treasure in Carter County, Kentucky.
