Kentucky Highway Industry Scholarship Program

The Kentucky Highway Industries Scholarship Program is sponsored by three associations, Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors, Kentucky Crushed Stone Association and Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky.  Kentucky Crushed Stone Association is the host association for administration of the scholarship program. Those eligible include students whose parent/grandparent/guardian or spouse is employed by any member company of the three KHI associations, KAHC, KCSA, or PAIKY.  (The member company employee must either live in Kentucky or have a primary work address in Kentucky. As long as these qualifications are met, a scholarship is accepted for out of state schools.)  Member company employees are also eligible to participate.

There are now 3 scholarship awards with differing requirements:

  1. Vocational or Technical School applications – requires the student’s latest transcript and FAFSA form.  The essay questions may be answered with a brief video instead of written form.
  1. Associate or Bachelor’s degree applications – requires the student’s latest transcript and FAFSA form and essay questions answered.  (Our usual application.)
  1. I Build America-KY applications – (up to 2 $5,000 awards) for a Junior or Senior majoring in engineering or industry specific degree.  Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required along with a letter of recommendation from industry employment.  There are no financial reporting requirements for this award and applicants can also apply for the regular bachelor’s award as well.

KHI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Kentucky Highway Industries (KHI) firmly believes that higher education is one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways in which to invest in the future of our students.  Based on that belief, KHI has instituted a scholarship program to offer monetary grants beginning in the fall of 2023.  The mission of the Kentucky Highway Industries (KHI) in offering this scholastic grant is to “establish a scholarship fund which will benefit the community of the Commonwealth of Kentucky through advanced education.”  We realize that this grant is supplemental in nature, relative to the cost of an advanced education.

These grants are offered to anyone enrolled in a higher education institution, including public or private colleges and universities, and public or private vocational or technical schools regardless of field of study. (This includes pursuit of a CDL license and Diesel Mechanic training.)

Who is eligible to apply?  High School Seniors or students currently enrolled in a Kentucky Higher Education institution, whose parent/grandparent/guardian or spouse is employed by any member company of the Kentucky Association of Highway Contractors, Kentucky Crushed Stone Association or Plantmix Asphalt Industry of Kentucky.  The member company employee must have completed at least one year satisfactory employment and either live in Kentucky or have a primary work address in Kentucky. Your Grade Point Average must be 2.5 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale) for the previous year of education (high school or college).

This grant is for one year.  Students may reapply for these grants but are not guaranteed repeat awards.  Students working toward a vocational or technical school certificate or an associate degree can receive a maximum of two awards in the respective category.  Students applying for a bachelor’s degree can receive a maximum of four awards in this category.  No student is automatically considered for this grant.  Only those who apply in a given year will be considered.

Grants may be awarded to vocational or technical school applicants, which include first-year students and second-year students.  Grants may be awarded to associate degree applicants.  Grants may be awarded to Bachelor’s Degree applicants, which includes freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior.  Any funds not used in a category may be moved and utilized in another category.
