In place of the annual Underground Stone Safety Seminar, the Kentucky Crushed Stone Association is hosting a series of underground stone webinars with our partners at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2, 2020. We are going to host three sessions in two hour time blocks over the two day period. While this is not our traditional underground stone safety conference as we are meeting virtually, we are commited to continue bringing you the latest safety and education trends related to the underground stone industry. We think you will thoroughly enjoy these sessions and will benefit from the educational opportunies.

We are anticipating using the Zoom platform for these webinars and will email the login links to the registered attendees prior to each session. The webinars will serve as 6 Continuing Education Units for those that need the credited hours. We will provide the certificates following the meeting.

Webinar Agenda

Day 1 - Tuesday, December 1

Session 1

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. EST

Title: Higher injury rates for less experienced stone miners - preliminary discussion of findings

Presenter: Dr. Blaine P. Connor and Dr. Launa Mallett, NIOSH Mining Program

Abstract: Stone miners who are new to their worksite are at greater risk of injury, regardless of prior mining experience. Those with less than two years of experience are far more often injured than those with greater experience, according to NIOSH analysis of historical injury data. It is therefore important for mines to consider all the ways they can help protect their less experienced workers. In this webinar, we will share the injury rate findings and some of the approaches stone and other mine operators have been taking to keep their recently hired miners safe at work. Our aim is for participants to leave the webinar considering miners "new 'til two" and thinking more broadly about what actions they can take to help them.

Dr. Connor and Dr. Mallett are social scientists on the NIOSH Pittsburgh Mining Research Division's Escape, Rescue, and Training Team.

Session 2:

Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. EST

Title: New Blasting Technology and Techniques for Underground Operators

Presenter: Nathan Rouse and Tristan Worsey, DynoNobel

Abstract: This discussion covers a handful of topics that may be helpful to modern day underground limestone mining operations. These topics include:

  1. Modern explosives technologies and recent developments in the industry
  2. How to adjust drill pattern designs to account for characteristics of modern day explosives
  3. Future developments in drilling and explosive technologies

Participants can expect to learn how to adjust V-Cut pattern designs and other types of patterns to improve pull or wall control when using modern day primers and bulk explosives. The presenters will include recommendations and case study examples of practices that can be used to improve pull or wall control. Additionally, the presenters will cover technologies that have recently been developed or are currently in development. The technologies covered include current and future initiation system technologies, current and future bulk explosives products and delivery systems, and current and future drilling technologies.

Bios:

Nathan Rouse, PhD, Principal Consultant at DynoConsult. Dr. Rouse has over 10 years of global experience in the mining and blasting industry with expertise in blast instrumentation and root cause analysis, optimization and auditing in surface and underground mines, vibration control, training, and expert witness work.

Tristan Worsey, Principal Consultant at DynoConsult. Mr. Worsey has over 10 years of experience in performing explosives and surface and underground mining engineering work.  His expertise includes drill and blast optimization, specialty blasting and equipment rescue, proximity blasting, training, and post-blast investigations.

Day 2 - Wednesday, December 2

Session 3

Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. EST

Title: EXAMiner: Notes from the Field

Authors: Brianna M. Eiter, PhD and Omar Franco

Abstract: Hazard recognition is a critical skill for all mineworkers. It is especially important during pre-shift and workplace examinations when mineworkers are tasked with finding and fixing hazards at their workplace. To ensure that all mineworkers are able to effectively perform a pre-shift and workplace examination, NIOSH has created products, such as EXAMiner, that can be used to improve hazard recognition. EXAMiner is a software tool that allows companies the opportunity to use NIOSH materials or upload their own pictures to create their own hazard recognition materials. This webinar will include a brief explanation of the EXAMiner software, and a demonstration of its key features. We will finish the webinar with real examples of how EXAMiner has been used by the mining industry and provide and tips and best practices for how you can incorporate EXAMiner into your current health and safety program.

During this presentation, NIOSH will provide:

Biography:

While with NIOSH, she has researched hazard recognition and risk perception, informational needs of underground coal miners, and fatigue risk management for small mines. Her recent work has involved creating VR work environments and developing training tools to address hazard recognition and risk assessment abilities. Brianna has 20 years of experience studying human cognition and using eye-tracking to measure human behavior. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Lehigh University and earned her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Cognitive Psychology from Binghamton University.

Omar Franco is the Safety Director for Cornejo & Sons LLC, a division of Summit Materials. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Minor in Business Administration from Wichita State University, and has been with Cornejo for nine years.
